Could Spencer Rattler make first career start Sunday?
Former South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler‘s time could be coming.
The rookie signal-caller is a “strong candidate” to make his first career NFL start this Sunday, according to a report from the NFL Network’s Mike Garafal.
Saints starting quarterback Derek Carr is expected to miss multiple weeks after suffering an oblique injury in a 26-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday.
New Orleans is set to host Tampa Bay Sunday at 1 p.m. on FOX.

Rattler and Jake Haener battled it out in the preseason for the right to be Carr’s backup. It was Haener who replaced Carr in Monday night’s game, completing 2 of 7 passes for 17 yards with no touchdowns or picks.
Rattler has yet to appear in a regular-season NFL game but has some impressive moments in the preseason, completing 20 of 38 passes for 202 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions
Rattler finished his career in Columbia with 6,212 yards passing, 37 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.

As a recruit, Rattler was a five-star prospect and one of the most sought after players in the country coming out of Pinnacle High School in Phoenix. He ranked as the No. 1 quarterback in the 2019 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Rattler was thought to go as high as the second round in the draft but fell to the fifth where the Saints took him with the 150 overall pick.

“I think they’re getting a guy with a huge upside,” Shane Beamer said at the time during an interview on the NOF Network. “Fantastic person, somebody that obviously, you know, I’ve been around since 2019 when we were together at Oklahoma.”
“I think he has just been through so much adversity,” Beamer said. “His story? He has weathered some storms from what happened at Oklahoma, some of the adversity he felt he dealt with here at South Carolina with injuries and whatnot.”
Rattler threw for over 10,800 yards, 77 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions in his college career.
