Over five years since EDGE George Wilson originally committed to South Carolina as a high school prospect in 2020, the talented pass-rusher will finally suit up in the Garnet and Black this season.

Now a transfer from Campbell, Wilson inked with the Gamecocks Tuesday night via the transfer portal, helping South Carolina fill a major need and giving Wilson another opportunity at the Power 4 level.

He has one year of eligibility left.

After starting his college career at Florida State, the 6-foot-4, 230-pounder spent the last two seasons at Campbell, where he collected a combined nine sacks in those two years.

In 2023, Wilson’s first year with the Fighting Camels, Wilson played in all 11 games, making four starts with 21 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and a team-high four sacks.

This past season, he played in 12 games with seven starts, collecting 18 tackles, including 6.0 TFLs and five sacks.

Wilson spent the first two years of his career at FSU, redshirting in 2021 and appearing in three games in 2022.

Many South Carolina fans will remember when the Green Run High School graduate from Virginia Beach, Va., surprisingly committed to the Gamecocks during the summer of 2020, over finalists North Carolina, Arizona State, and Penn State.

But Wilson ultimately backed off that pledge when Will Muschamp was fired later that year and signed with the Seminoles.

Ranked a four-star by some services and a three-star by others out of high school, Wilson was ranked as high as the No. 12 EDGE and No. 189 overall prospect in the 2021 class (by 247Sports).

His addition to the Gamecocks comes after Carolina added another EDGE prospect with old ties to the program via the portal when Demon Clowney, Jadeveon Clowney’s cousin, inked with the school.

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer spoke on Monday about the need for players on the defensive line.

“Defensive line — defensive end and defensive tackle — that’s a position that just numbers wise, we’re not where we need to be right now, just overall depth,” Beamer said. “So I felt that way going into the spring that that might be a position that we look to add.

“If we don’t, it’s okay. But at the same time, when you’ve had some injuries up there and you don’t want to necessarily rely on true freshmen at defensive tackle, that makes you think about things.”
