South Carolina running back Juju McDowell will miss the remainder of the season.

Gamecock head football coach Shane Beamer said Saturday following the Gamecocks win over Vanderbilt that McDowell has a broken collarbone. The junior was seen going to the locker room in the first half of South Carolina’s 47-6 win over the Commodores.

The Gamecocks were already short at running back with Dakereon Joyner out with an ankle injury.

“Heart breaks for that kid,” Beamer said. “He’ll be out the next two weeks. He’ll come back stronger than ever. Hate it for him. Obviously, our running back situation right now is a concern with Dakereon being out right now and Juju. So that’s why DJay Braswell and Mario Anderson were in there so much today. And need those guys to continue to go on.

“But hate it for Juju. He brings so much energy. But what a testament to that kid that as soon as, he breaks his collarbone and then I look out there on the field and he’s out there trying to motivate the team to go to timeout on the sideline at the end of the first quarter. So he’s awesome and he’s a great energy booster for our football team as well and will continue to be also.”

Joyner, who exited the Jacksonville State game with an ankle injury, could be available next week but Beamer did not seem optimistic in that outcome.

“I think it’s possible. Yeah. I’d say as we sit here today, I’d say it’s doubtful,” Beamer said. “But, you know, I’m never going to doubt Dakereon from that standpoint. He wants to and he’ll do everything in his power to get back. And he’s in great spirits and, like Juju, bringing energy to carry on to that today as well. And credit him, too.”

Tight end Trey Knox missed last week with a hamstring injury and was thought to be back this weekend but with the rainy weather conditions and the Gamecocks in control of the game, Carolina held him out as more of a precaution.

“He was available. He practiced on Thursday, Trey did,” Beamer said. “When we met as a staff this morning at the hotel at 7, what we said was, well, we’d love to not have to use him. Let’s see how the game is going. Let’s see how Trey feels in pregame warm-ups. And if we did use him today, it was going to be more of just maybe situational football, third down, red zone, things like that as well. But we didn’t need him. We used JonDarius Morgan, one of our offensive linemen, we used him as kind of an extra tight end for blocking today. And didn’t have to. So, Trey, credit him for working hard this week to get in position to play if we needed him today. But we just didn’t feel great about putting him in there.”

South Carolina will square off with Kentucky next week with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Williams-Brice Stadium.
