Shane Beamer press conference | South Carolina's starting QB named

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer exited Saturday’s final preseason camp scrimmage, feeling good about his football team’s health status, though there were a couple of nicks and bruises, so to speak, in that workout.

Somewhat lost in the shuffle of the Gamecocks announcing their starting quarterback on Tuesday, Beamer also gave the latest on the injury front after assessing things in the days following.

“Injury update coming out of the scrimmage, we’re in pretty good shape overall,” Beamer said. “The only two issues from the scrimmage were that Emory Floyd has a little bit of a lower-body issue — he should be fine for Old Dominion next week — and Aaryn Parks got his ankle rolled up a little bit. We’ll see about him; I’d say he’s probably doubtful for next week. Other than that, we came out of the scrimmage on Saturday in pretty good shape, and the guys had Sunday off.”

As was originally reported on Saturday, several players — EDGE Bryan Thomas Jr., TE Reid Mikeska, TE Nick Elksnis, OL Jakai Moore, and EDGE Elijah Davis — were held out of the scrimmage but none of the injuries are believed to be too serious.

“All of those guys should be fine; expect them back this week for sure,” Beamer said Saturday. “Nothing long-term. During the scrimmage, had a couple of hamstring issues that some guys weren’t able to finish in the secondary. Nothing long-term.”

Additionally, running backs Rocket Sanders and Juju McDowell, linebacker Bam Martin-Scott, and wide receiver Vandrevius Jacobs — all projected contributors who missed the prior week’s scrimmage — were back in action at Williams-Brice over the weekend.

“So from that standpoint, knock on wood, but really in so much better health than we were last year,” Beamer said Saturday. “Looking back at last year on this day last year, we had I think it was 11 players that did not participate in this scrimmage that started the preseason healthy. And this year, most all of those guys — Reid hasn’t really healthy since we started, so other than Bryan, Jakai, Nick, and Elijah — I mean that’s four guys and they’re all going to be back — so we’re in good shape from a health standpoint, which is especially gratifying after a physical preseason camp that we’ve had.”

With class starting this week on campus at South Carolina, the Gamecocks are working through a mock game week as a trial run for the lead-up to the first game during the week after.
