Injury report: Gamecocks thin in secondary right now
There’s almost always one position that gets hit harder than the others by injuries and for South Carolina football this spring that appears to be the defensive backfield.
Luckily for the Gamecocks, there aren’t any major long-term issues there, according to head coach Shane Beamer.
“Have some guys out injury-wise on defense in the secondary right now, so we were really thin back there and those guys had to play a lot of plays (Saturday in the scrimmage) and did a good job,” Beamer said Tuesday.

Cornerback Marcellas Dial, nickelback Keenan Nelson Jr. and safety Peyton Williams were all absent from the open on-field portion of practice on Tuesday.
“Dial and Nelson are gonna be fine,” Beamer said. “Nothing long-term, just hamstrings, groins, things like that, nothing long-term. Hopefully get them back here soon.”
“(Williams) is another DB who is dealing with a little bit of an injury right now, nothing long-term,” Beamer added. “He wasn’t practicing today.”
Both Dial and Nelson started the spring as perceived starters.
Isaiah Norris was spotted with the first-team at cornerback, while Kajuan Banks was playing the nickelback spot for the Gamecocks in practice Tuesday.

South Carolina senior offensive lineman Jakai Moore was also apparently absent during the open portion of practice but Beamer said that it was for non-injury and non-disciplinary reasons.
“Jakai is going through an off-the-field issue, a tragedy in his family,” Beamer said. “So, thoughts and prayers go out to him, a really tough thing that he’s going through right now.”
Defensive lineman Tonka Hemingway, offensive tackle Cason Henry, linebacker Mo Kaba and EDGE Jordan Strachan will likely miss the entirety of the spring while defensive back David Spaulding is currently being held out as well but could return to action in the latter part of the spring.
All four are rehabbing surgeries and will be 100 percent for the 2023 season.
