LaNorris Sellers has thrust himself into the national spotlight after a strong 2024 season, his first as South Carolina’s starting signal-caller.

After failing to make a bowl game the year before, the Gamecocks were on the cusp of reaching the College Football Playoff this past season. Sellers showcased his dual-threat abilities each contest along the way of the way.

South Carolina is expected to remain one of the country’s top programs in 2025. Many outlets have placed the Gamecocks in their “way too early” top 25 rankings, while some media personalities – like On3’s Andy Staples and Ari Wasserman – have the team in their projected College Football Playoff brackets. Both Staples and Wasserman cited Sellers as a factor that merited South Carolina’s inclusion.

Staples’ and Wasserman’s praise of Sellers carried into an episode of the “Andy and Ari On3” podcast published on April 9th. In this specific episode, they discussed the top returning quarterbacks in college football. Sellers served as a focal point of their discussion, as he appeared second in both Staples’ and Wasserman’s individual top-10 lists.

Only Florida quarterback DJ Lagway was rated higher by Staples and Wasserman.

“Many of the arguments for Sellers are similar to the arguments for Lagway: There are things he can do that most other QBs simply can’t. He’s the most dangerous runner on this list, but his arm strength is off the charts. Like Lagway, Sellers is capable of floating a ball over the defense or throwing a rocket into a tight window,” Wasserman said.

“Sellers significantly raises South Carolina’s chances of competing for an SEC title and a College Football Playoff berth, and I don’t think we’ve seen all he can do. He threw for 2,534 yards and ran for 674 last year. He probably can improve upon both numbers, even against a vicious schedule.”

In addition to his contributions in terms of yardage, Sellers completed 65.6% (169-299) of his passes. He also scored a combined 25 touchdowns – 18 through the air and seven on the ground.

Sellers’ on-field exploits also helped him earn multiple postseason recognitions. The Football Writers Association of America named Sellers its Offensive Freshman of the Year, while the SEC’s coaches named him the conference’s Freshman of the Year. He also received multiple All-SEC nods from the coaches (Third-Team) and Phil Steele (Second-Team).
