Notes on what Shane Beamer said in Rock Hill

South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer met with the media Monday evening prior to signing autographs and taking pictures with fans at the York County stop of the Welcome Home Tour, the final such meeting of the offseason.
Below are quick notes on what the fifth-year head coach had to say.
Keep up with all things Gamecocks for just $1 for 7 days—lock in this special offer today!
— There are no organized team activities until right after Memorial Day, but some of the players have stuck around. Saw all of the running backs were getting a workout in today. Most of the offensive linemen have stuck around for the month. Nyck Harbor is still in town.
May is a big month of planning for the head coach. And doing events like the Welcome Home Tour. There’s a little downtime to play some golf and catch your breath a little bit. It’s busy but not near as busy as the grind of June which has camps and recruiting visits and team activities. The NCAA allows you to get on the field with the guys some in June.
— Kickoff returner and punt returner are two positions that are wide open.
Jalon Kilgore is the “safety blanket” at punt returner. You know you’ve got a guy that has done it in games but then the young guys have exciting potential too. You name a freshman receivers and there’s a pretty good chance they’ve caught punts.
Nyck Harbor has been back there catching kickoffs. Jaquel Holman can return kicks. Joe D spent a lot of time on that in the spring and gave a lot of guys opportunities in the spring game. Need to be better but excited about the potential at both positions.
— Still nothing new on running back Rahsul Faison. Saw him in the weight room today getting in a workout but nothing new on the waiver. Hoping to have some closure there soon.
— On which true freshmen will play:
Looking at the wide receiver position, naturally with the number of guys you play there, a handful if not all of the freshmen receivers are going to play there. Want to play at least six guys total, two guys at each receiver spot.
Feel confident that OL Shed Sarratt has put himself in position coming out of the spring to play a lot.

Beyond that, it kind of depends, but we’re trying to get them all ready to play. Potentally at kicker, depending on what Max Kelley does when he comes in.
— A new kicker coming in, it’s different because they’re not learning a system or scheme — you don’t have any of that at kicker.
For him, it will be more about the mental aspect of it, kicking in front of thousands of people vs. high school.
We think he’s made of the right stuff to handle it but no matter what you do in practice, it’s not real until you get in a game.
— Malik Clark has been fantastic. He came in an solidified himself as one of those guys we feel like can play a lot. He’s come in and worked hard and has high expectations for himself. He’s been everything we thought he would be. Really proud of him.
— Spend a lot of time talking with the coaches in Rock Hill and have a great relationship with all of them. It’s great football and that starts with the great men leading the programs. South Csarolina has spent a lot of time recruiting Rock Hill and will plan to continue to do that.
