Shane Beamer is moving closer to hiring a new offensive coordinator for his South Carolina Gamecocks football program.

Dowell Loggains, currently an assistant at Arkansas, is the strong leading candidate to join Beamer’s staff in the OC role, GamecockCentral.com has learned. A deal with Loggains had not been officially finalized as of Sunday morning.

A University of South Carolina Board of Trustees meeting is on the docket for Tuesday, December 13, and was previously scheduled to deal with non-athletics matters. That meeting, however, would give the Board an opportunity to formally approve a contract for Loggains.

Loggains would join South Carolina after a two-year stint at his alma mater at Arkansas, where he served as tight ends coach.

The 42-year-old has coordinator experience, all at the NFL level. He started his career with the Tennessee Titans, working his way up from quality control to quarterbacks coach and eventually offensive coordinator.

From there, he went to the Cleveland Browns before landing with Chicago and offensive coordinator Adam Gase. Loggains and Gase would largely be tied at the hip the next half-decade.

Loggains was the Bears’ quarterbacks coach for the 2015 season where he helped Jay Cutler to a career season. He took over as offensive coordinator the next two years once Gase left for a head coaching opportunity.

Loggains would then link back up with Gase in Miami for a season and with the New York Jets for two years, both stops as offensive coordinator. While Loggains carried the offensive coordinator title, Gase was the primary play caller on those teams.

After New York, Loggains found his way briefly to Penn State as an analyst under James Franklin before returning home to Arkansas as a position coach.

He has worked with Arkansas offensive coordinator Kendall Briles the last two years and proven to be a quality recruiter during his tenure.

The Razorbacks have two four-star tight ends committed in Shamar Easter (No. 141 overall) and Luke Hasz (No. 209). Three-star Jaden Hamm (No. 421) is also in the class.

The Gamecocks have been in the market for a new offensive coordinator thanks to Marcus Satterfield leaving to join Matt Rhule’s staff at Nebraska.

Satterfield’s offenses were largely inconsistent, but they ended on a high note. The Gamecocks scored 94 points and put up over 1,000 yards of offense the final two weeks of the season in wins over Tennessee and Clemson.

South Carolina’s new man will have the potential to work with a wealth of returning talent. Spencer Rattler, Juice Wells and MarShawn Lloyd could all potentially return and forgo the NFL Draft this season.

The contact period in recruiting runs through Dec. 17. South Carolina begins its bowl practice two days prior and will play Notre Dame Dec. 30 in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl (3:30 p.m.).
