'We're not done yet': Beamer shares what's next in recruiting

In the early signing period, Shane Beamer delivered what is the No. 17 recruiting class in the country for 2023. He’s hoping it’s even better over the coming days, weeks and months.
Over 20 recruits signed with South Carolina, a big win for the Gamecocks after losing a handful of players to the transfer portal.
Beamer quickly dismissed the rumors of demise during his Wednesday press conference, citing the 2023 class a culmination of two years of hard work.
“Obviously, there are ebbs and flows throughout recruiting, but the biggest thing is to just stay the course. And we certainly did throughout this process,” he said. “To me, this day has been two years in the making with a lot of these guys…We were certainly behind the eight-ball in a lot of ways when I got hired because we hadn’t spent as much time with those prospects that are freshmen in colleges now really didn’t know us. We hadn’t spent as much time. Those prospects who are freshmen in college now really didn’t know us. We put a lot of effort into last year’s signing class but these guys who signed today…those are guys who from day one we started recruiting heavily when I first got here. It’s great to see that come to fruition today.”

The next big recruiting date will be National Signing Day on Feb. 1. But it’s never too early to look toward the future for the class of 2024 and 2025.
“I’m finishing up this recruiting class and getting a head start on next year,” Beamer said.

There are still positions that South Carolina will look to fill starting with next year’s recruiting class. For instance, the team didn’t sign a quarterback and will keep pursuing that position, Beamer said.
“When you go into a recruiting cycle, just like we will with the class of ’24, you have at each position your target number of what you want to sign in that year’s recruiting class,” he said.

Beamer added that he wouldn’t shy away from adding a great player, regardless of position.
“We love where we are right now but you’re always planning ahead for attrition as well,” Beamer said. “I hope we don’t have anyone else leave our program but you’re always prepared for that and trying to stay one step ahead also if you have attrition in your own program.”

South Carolina currently has one commitment for 2024, according to On3. Four-star quarterback Dante Reno announced his commitment to the Gamecocks in early July.
After the Gator Bowl on Dec. 30, Beamer and his staff will spend most of January on the recruiting trail. Newly-hired offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains will have a big role in the recruiting process.
“The first weekend in January is a weekend where if we wanted to bring in potential transfers onto campus to visit we can. There may be some guys that come in that weekend in which probably will — Dowell will be involved with that,” Beamer said.
“And then the following week is when we’re able to go back out on the road recruiting for the rest of January. So he’ll be on the road every single day like all of us will be in the month of January.”
