South Carolina Gamecocks running back Lovasea Carroll has medically retired from football, according to a post made by Carroll on his Instagram account.

“I am going to have to say goodbye to the game that has been by my side for as long as I can remember,” Carroll said in the post.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder missed South Carolina’s bowl prep with an undisclosed injury.

Carroll, who started his career at Georgia, entered the transfer portal last January and then committed to the Gamecocks later that month.

Carroll transitioned back to running back in his lone season at Carolina after redshirting while playing defensive back at UGA, though he played in just five games for the Gamecocks, all on special teams.

The loss of the former four-star running back is another blow to the position at South Carolina.

The Gamecocks also lost running backs MarShawn Lloyd and Rashad Amos to the transfer portal. Jaheim Bell, a tight end who played running back late last season, also entered the portal and transferred to Florida State.

South Carolina will count on a couple of newcomers to make an immediate impact in Newberry College transfer Mario Anderson, who enrolled for spring practice, and four-star signee Dontavius Braswell, who will arrive this summer.

The On3 Consensus, which equally averages the major recruiting rankings, ranked Carroll as the No. 121 overall prospect and No. 4 “athlete” in the 2021 class.

Known for his speed and big-play ability, the Warrenton, Ga. native transferred to IMG Academy in 2019 after spending his freshman and sophomore year at Warren County High School.

As a senior at IMG, Carroll recorded 464 yards and seven touchdowns on just 42 carries while grabbing nine receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown on the way to an 8-0 record.
