With four days until South Carolina football hosts No. 5 Tennessee in its home finale at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday, the status of injured running backs MarShawn Lloyd and Christian Beal-Smith remains up in the air for that matchup.

Lloyd, the Gamecocks’ lead back and top offensive threat, has missed the last two games after suffering a significant thigh bruise against Missouri. Beal-Smith has been in and out of the lineup all season long after dealing with a preseason football injury and missed the game at Florida.

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer provided the latest on each during his weekly Tuesday press conference.

“Anybody that went down in the Florida game is fine; everybody practiced today,” Beamer said. “The only two guys that were limited in practice today that we are hopeful can play on Saturday would be MarShawn and CBS — both of those guys were limited today in practice. Too early to say whether they’re definitely out or not. They both have told me they’re doing everything in their power to play. We’ll see where things are. They did a lot of good stuff treatment-wise today and we’ll kinda see where they are tomorrow and hopefully they can do more in practice tomorrow than what they did today.”

Prior to the injury, Lloyd had emerged as South Carolina’s leading rusher and arguably most valuable player, rushing for 556 yards and nine touchdowns on 100 carries.

While all of the details were not provided, the Gamecocks also had nine players miss at least some practice time last week with the flu.

Xavier Legette, Boogie Huntley, Cam Smith and Brad Johnson were some of the guys who were mentioned.

“Flu-wise, we are good,” Beamer said. “I think I mentioned Legette and a bunch of starters on defense were out with the flu, no one had any issues yesterday or today, so hopefully that’s behind us.”

Two of South Carolina’s defensive backs – Darius Rush and Devonni Reed – were banged up in the Florida game but both are expected to be available vs. the Vols.

Gamecock football has previously lost two defensive starters – EDGE Jordan Strachan and linebacker Mohamed Kaba – to season-ending injuries. Both Strachan and Kaba went down during the Arkansas game.

Wide receiver Chad Terrell has missed the 2023 campaign with an ACL injury. Nickel/safety David Spaulding injured his foot and is also out for the season after returning to play against Kentucky. Receiver Corey Rucker had season-ending foot surgery earlier this month.

Saturday’s matchup is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff in a sold-out Williams-Brice Stadium on ESPN.
