Spencer Rattler continues to impress Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy
Despite South Carolina’s 2-5 start to the season, quarterback Spencer Rattler continues to impress those who have their finger on the pulse of what NFL teams will be thinking this spring.
Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy earlier this year applauded Rattler for his effort in the Gamecocks’ Week 1 loss to North Carolina and echoed some of those same sentiments during a recorded spot for the SEC Network’s broadcast this past Saturday.

“It is a loaded quarterback class for the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl. In South Carolina, Spencer Rattler will be squarely in the mix for an invite,” Nagy said. “He’s one of the best pure pocket passers in this year’s class. If you give him time, he will absolutely pick you apart. He can rip NFL throws down the field, as we’ve seen him do all season to Xavier Legette.”
It’s been a tough season overall for the Gamecocks and an up-and-down year for a bang-up and battered offense, particularly on the o-line and at receiver. But according to Nagy, it will be a plus in the eyes of NFL execs that Rattler has been able to do what he’s done while working behind a patchwork offensive line all year.
“I think the issue for Spencer this year is he’s faced a lot of fast pressure, particularly off the edges, that’s made him move,” Nagy continued. “But for NFL evaluators, that’s been a good thing. I think they’ve seen more mobility out of Spencer. He’s gonna enter the draft process with over 40 career starts at the college level, which is huge. And he’s got some big games still left on the schedule, including (this past Saturday) against a Missouri defense that has a lot of NFL talent on it, where he can prove to NFL scouts that he is a starter at the next level.”

Nagy’s comments are similar to those of CBS Draft analyst Ryan Wilson who earlier this month moved the Gamecocks’ senior up to a first-rounder from a Day 2 in his latest mock draft.
“He will rip any throw. He trusts his receivers implicitly. He stands in the pocket and takes hits. You don’t see the demeanor sometimes you see from quarterbacks who, in the fourth quarter, have been hit in the mouth 50 times and they’re sort of exasperated and trying to get this thing over with,” Wilson said on the “With the First Pick” podcast. “He takes on every challenge that comes his way. Not the biggest quarterback, but he’s more athletic than I remembered. I’m impressed with his moxie. He has grit.”
Rattler and the Gamecocks travel to Texas A&M this weekend where they’ll try to get back on the winning track after losing three straight. The noon matchup will be on SEC Network.
