CBS Sports has released an updated 2023 NFL Mock Draft for the month of October, and South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler has moved back into the top 32.

Draft analyst Ryan Wilson has the Gamecocks’ senior as a first-rounder, going to the New Orleans Saints with the 21st overall pick.

“Rattler has been so much fun to watch this season, and it’s a testament to his hard work and maturity,” said Wilson. “He’s one of the toughest players in college football and has special arm talent.”

In September, Wilson had a “late day two” grade on Spencer Rattler. He’s now amended that to have the talented passer in round one.

“He will rip any throw. He trusts his receivers implicitly. He stands in the pocket and takes hits. You don’t see the demeanor sometimes you see from quarterbacks who, in the fourth quarter, have been hit in the mouth 50 times and they’re sort of exasperated and trying to get this thing over with,” Wilson said on the “With the First Pick” podcast. He takes on every challenge that comes his way. Not the biggest quarterback, but he’s more athletic than I remembered. I’m impressed with his moxie. He has grit.”

Wilson’s mock draft has several quarterbacks going in the first round as of right now. Southern Cal’s Caleb Williams, who was at one time at Oklahoma with Rattler, is first as the number one pick. He’s followed by UNC’s Drake Maye at number three overall. CBS Sports has Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders next at pick 15, then Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. at number 19, followed by Rattler.

“The staff there at South Carolina all offseason was talking about what a great offseason Spencer had, and you could see that there’s a lot of growth from last year’s tape,” Senior Bowl head Jim Nagy told On3’s Andy Staples last month.

For the season, Spencer Rattler has tallied 1,411 passing yards, completing 73 percent of his passes. He’s thrown 7 touchdowns to 3 interceptions through five games.

“The line I always tell Spencer–it’s biblical–to much is given much is required,” USC offensive corodinator Dowell Loggains said in September. “He’s earned my trust. Some days with him you feel like Superman as a playcaller. Call anything and he’ll make it right. He’s spaghetti sauce. He’ll cover up anything. He gets you out of bad plays and into good plays.”
