Shane Beamer provides Tuesday update on status of MarShawn Lloyd

South Carolina football continues to monitor the status of star running back MarShawn Lloyd who suffered a “pretty significant bruise” to his thigh that limited him in the loss to Missouri and then kept him out of the Vanderbilt game.

Head coach Shane Beamer said during his Sunday night teleconference that he was optimistic that Lloyd would be available for this Saturday afternoon’s matchup with Florida.

He provided another update on Tuesday.

“MarShawn was limited today but told me he felt a lot better than he thought he was going to feel,” Beamer said during his regular Tuesday press conference.

South Carolina announced on Saturday night that safety David Spaulding, who did not play in the game, is likely out for the remainder of the season.

Spaulding, who didn’t make the trip to Nashville, is sidelined with the same foot injury Christian Beal-Smith had in the preseason.

On Tuesday, Beamer confirmed that Spaulding will definitely miss the final four games of the year.

“Spaulding is done for the year,” he said. “I know I mentioned that (possibility) Saturday in Nashville. Hate that for him but wish him well in his recovery. Beyond that, it’s a handful of guys that are questionable right now.”

Walk-on safety B.J. Gibson had an MRI on his hamstring on Monday, according to Beamer, after exiting the Vanderbilt game early.

“Results are back, I’d say he’s day-to-day,” Beamer said. “Nothing long-term, just kind of see how quickly he can respond to treatment. He wasn’t able to do much in practice.”

The Gamecocks had some players leave the game in Nashville but guys like Nick Emmanwori and DQ Smith were able to return to action on Saturday night and Beamer doesn’t believe there were any serious injuries in the game.

South Carolina has been especially nicked up in the secondary and Beamer said they have had the conversation about possibly moving players from other positions but it hasn’t gotten to that point and they believe the young players who haven’t played much could step in if needed.

The Gamecocks, after earning their sixth win over the season on Saturday, travel to Florida this upcoming Saturday with a 4:00 kickoff vs. the Gators.
