Redshirt freshman wide receiver Elijah Caldwell will move on from South Carolina and enter the NCAA transfer portal, he said on Sunday.

Caldwell is the fourth player at the wide receiver position who is planning to enter the portal, which opens to all of college football on Monday.

Debron Gatling, CJ Adams, and Tyshawn Russell have already expressed an intent to enter the portal as well.

The Rock Hill (South Carolina) Northwestern product released a statement to his X account:

First and foremost, I want to thank God for providing me with the opportunity to be where I am today.

“I am truly grateful to the University of South Carolina, the coaching staff, my teammates, the fans, and everyone who has supported me along the way. Being a part of this program has been an incredible experience, and I will forever treasure the friendships I’ve made and the memories I’ve built during my time here.

After careful consideration and discussions with my family, I have decided to enter the transfer portal. I’m eager and excited to see what the future has in store as I take the next step in my journey.

Thank you, Gamecock Nation, for all the love and support.”

Caldwell joined the program as part of the class of 2023. He did not see any game action last season, taking a redshirt. He did not play during the 2024 season, either.

Transfer portal background information

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II, and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

The portal has been around since Oct. 15, 2018, and the new calendar cycle within the portal begins each August. For example, the 2021-22 cycle started Aug. 1. During the 2020-21 cycle, 2,626 FBS football players entered the transfer portal (including walk-ons). That comes after 1,681 entered during the 2019-20 cycle and 1,709 during the abbreviated 2018-19 cycle. In comparison, 1,833 Division I basketball players entered the portal during the 2020-21 cycle after totals of 1,020 in 2019-20 and 1,063 in 2018-19.
