Milaysia Fulwiley committed to South Carolina Thursday afternoon.

Fulwiley is currently the 16th-ranked player in the 2023 class, but was once ranked as high as second. She has been a star player at Keenan High in Columbia since she was in seventh grade. At that time she earned offers from South Carolina and Ole Miss on the same day.

Fulwiley has been one of South Carolina’s priorities for this class ever since. Dawn Staley has regularly attended Fulwiley’s games for years, and it seemed like she was destined to be a Gamecock. Fulwiley notified Staley of her decision in a phone call Wednesday evening but kept her decision secret from everyone else until the ceremony.

Fulwiley picked South Carolina over Ole Miss, Miami, Florida, and Louisville. She also took visits to Ole Miss, Louisville, and Florida, who she said was her runner-up. On the day she left for Oxford, Staley stopped by Keenan to remind her how much she was wanted. Fulwiley took an unofficial visit to South Carolina in June and an official visit in November.

Fulwiley continues the Gamecocks’ strategy – and success – of keeping all the best talent home. Beginning with Aleighsa Welch (2011) and Khadijah Sessions (2012), the Gamecocks have managed land almost every in-state prospect they have wanted. That group includes Alaina Coates, Asia Dozier, A’ja Wilson, and, last year, Talaysia Cooper and Ashlyn Watkins. The last player the Gamecocks lost was Spring Valley’s Xylina McDaniel in 2012.

South Carolina has between four and nine open scholarships for next year, depending on who among the seniors decides to use a covid year. Laeticia Amihere, Brea Beal, Aliyah Boston, Zia Cooke, and Olivia Thompson are seniors who have the option of returning for next season.

Fulwiley joins Chloe Kitts, Sahnya Jah, and Tessa Johnson in South Carolina’s 2023 class. South Carolina’s remaining targets are Cassandre Prosper and Judea Watkins. ESPN ranked South Carolina’s class sixth in the country, and it will likely rise following Fulwiley’s commitment.
