After an electrifying bowl game performance to end last year, it’s been a struggle for Dakereon Joyner to get on the field this season for South Carolina

The South Carolina quarterback turned receiver multiple times over has been dealing with a calf injury and had his playing time limited because of it. But Shane Beamer reiterated Tuesday Joyner will absolutely have a role in this team when healthy.

“He’s a really good football player that’s a valuable member of all of our special teams and then a valuable member of our offense. Whether it’s wide receiver, whether it’s quarterback, whatever,” Beamer said. He’s shown that he can do that we need to continue to find ways to take that to keep him involved.”

Didn’t play in the Gamecocks’ opener against Georgia State but did log a few snaps in a loss at Arkansas.

He hasn’t recorded any stats yet, primarily laying on special teams. But his role on the team goes deeper than what someone sees on the field.

“He’s a great leader, first and foremost,” Beamer said. “I love Dakereon Joyner. He’s everything that’s right about Carolina football, and he’s a hell of a football player too.”

As Joyner continues to get closer and closer to fully healthy, it appears his role in South Carolina’s offense will continue to grow.

The Gamecocks are easing him back into the fold as he progresses.

“He wasn’t healthy in that first game and he was healthier last Saturday against Arkansas,” Beamer said. “So when he is healthy, he’s a fantastic leader.”

When healthy, Joyner will factor into South Carolina’s offense. South Carolina currently lists him as the starter in the slot with Ahmarean Brown. They are separated by an OR on the depth chart.

His most recently offensive performance came in the bowl game. He was the team’s starting quarterback, completing all nine of his passes for 160 yards while rushing 10 times for 64 yards.

Although Spencer Rattler is at the helm now, Beamer says that they are still well aware of Joyner’s skills at quarterback.

Beamer and offensive coordinator have mentioned Joyner’s ability to play quarterback. They’ve mentioned him having a package to play quarterback in Satterfield’s offense and showcase his athleticism.

When he comes back, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him log some snaps at quarterback.

“It’s not like we have forgotten what he did in the bowl game,” Beamer said. “He showed he can play quarterback in that bowl game at a high level.”
