In the 2023-2024 season, team chemistry was a huge factor in South Carolina men’s basketball’s success. As summer workouts are underway for the 2024-2025 season, head coach Lamont Paris sees some of the same chemistry being built.

One advantage to the season is multiple key players like Collin Murray-Boyles and Jacobi Wright are returning for another season. Because of this some of the same chemistry will translate into this season.

“It’s a process,” Paris said. “That’s what the summer, big part of what the summer is for. This is a little different than last year. We have more guys returning, particularly guys that were key contributors, than we did last year. So that helps with that whole process.”

Zachary Davis, Myles Stute and Benjamin Bosmans-Verdonk are also returning for another season. Last season, the Gamecocks made it apparent that they were playing for each other.

“But I don’t think there’s any secrets that I thought was one of the best qualities that we had was that we played well together. Guys enjoyed playing with each other and played for one another,” Paris said. So a lot of that was fostered in the summer.”

Last season the Gamecocks were able to grow closer on a Bahamas trip. Despite not taking the trip this season, there is no slowing down the growth.

“I think what might help to counteract the fact that we won’t be able to do that is that we do have more guys coming back,” Paris said. “So from a standpoint of terminology and you know culture and traditions and customs and things that we want to do, we have more of that.”

Arden Conyers, Austin Herro and Morris Ugusuk are amongst South Carolinas younger returning players. Despite seeing limited court time, these players still experienced the game winning chemistry.

“Even guys that didn’t play last year like Arden Conyers that was redshirting,” Paris said. “Those guys still have heard the things that we’re saying and so hopefully those help expedite the process of getting comfortable and playing with one another developing chemistry.”
