South Carolina locks in assistant coaches with raises and new contracts: 'It says a great statement about the men in this program'
It’s a busy time of year for South Carolina football in the month of December. But between everything going on, head coach Shane Beamer wanted to make sure his assistant coaches were taken care of.
“(It’s a) really busy time for us, as I’ve alluded to previously. The month of December is chaotic, to say the least, with everything that’s going on from a recruiting standpoint, portal standpoint, bowl standpoint, coaching standpoint,” he said. “There’s just a lot happening. But it’s a good busy, no question about it.”
On Tuesday, the University of South Carolina’s Board of Trustees formally provided raises and contract extensions through at least the 2026 season to assistant. football coaches. The move coincided with Mike Shula‘s hiring as the team’s offensive coordinator.

It also provided the South Carolina football program a firm foundation to build upon in the years to come.
“That was huge to be able to get that solidified before the bowl game,” Beamer said. “To be able to make a statement about where we are as a program and how we believe in these guys will be huge.”
Shula will earn a $1.1 million base salary each year of his three-year deal. This amount is $100,000 greater than the university committed to former offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains last season, according to USA Today’s salary database.
Multiple coaches whose contracts expired at the end of the year will now stick around for at least two more seasons. An additional four coaches – Clayton White, Joe DeCamillis, Shawn Elliott and Torrian Gray – will remain with the Gamecocks until 2027.

Some assistants also made long-term commitments to South Carolina despite outside interest, Beamer said.
“When you have the season that we just had, you have a lot of schools, programs that are interested in your coaches. We’ve had a coach turn down a coordinator job at another Power Four school. We’ve had a coach turn down a head coaching job in order to stay here. Those are just the ones that I’m aware of,” Beamer said. “Not to mention, we have the NFL jobs opening up here next month. And our guys are going to be popular there, as well.”
Beamer said he reached out to current athletics director Ray Tanner towards the end of the regular season about keeping this year’s coaching staff in Columbia. Beamer added that these coaches’ decisions to sign their new contracts weeks later speaks volumes about their dedication to South Carolina football.
“They didn’t have to sign anything. I put their contracts on their desks last Monday, and we had them all back by Friday at lunchtime. And it was done,” Beamer said. “It says a great statement about the men in this program that they want to be here and know they have a lot of excitement about 2025, just like we all do.”
