South Carolina continues to move up the baseball rankings and is officially in the top five of one poll this week with another big series on deck.

After being just on the cusp last week, the Gamecocks slid into the top five in one of the major polls Monday morning after what was a statement week for South Carolina.

The Gamecocks stayed put in the D1Baseball poll at No. 6 while Baseball America has South Carolina up a spot to No. 5 this week.

South Carolina now heads on the road for a three-game series at Vanderbilt. D1Baseball has Vanderbilt No. 4 nationally and Baseball America also slots them one spot ahead of the Gamecocks at No. 4.

It’s a massive series in the pecking order for the SEC East.

The top-five ranking in one poll comes after a great start to the week albeit with a lackluster ending.

South Carolina entered the week with four games on the docket against top 15 teams: a midweek game against North Carolina then a home series against top-ranked LSU.

The Gamecocks blanked North Carolina 5-0 in Charlotte Tuesday night before clubbing LSU 13-5 Thursday night.

The week did end on somewhat of a sour note with the Gamecocks blowing a 7-3 lead over the final two innings and weather preventing the third game in the series from being played.

But that shouldn’t take away from what was an insanely productive week for the Gamecocks.

“As we’ve been doing all year, we’ve been showing the country we’re a really good baseball team in all areas. We can pitch, we can hit. We have power, we have speed and we play good defense most days,” Mark Kingston said after Thursday’s win.

“Every day we get a chance to prove and put another brick in the wall showing we’re pretty darn good. It’s what we do. We don’t put too much emphasis on one day. But the total picture of what we’re doing right now is hard to ignore.”

South Carolina now sits at No. 3 in the RPI only behind top-ranked Kentucky followed by Virginia.

South Carolina is in the midst of an insanely tough stretch of its schedule, but that’s life in the SEC.

Four of the Gamecocks’ remaining six series are against teams in the RPI top 10: at Vanderbilt (7), Florida (8), at Kentucky (1) and at Arkansas (6). The other two are home series against Auburn (39) and Tennessee (19).

South Carolina hosts South Carolina Upstate (No. 98 RPI) Tuesday night at 7 p.m. before heading on the road for the Vanderbilt series.
