Spencer Rattler has been through his fair share of training camps–five now to be exact and in his second at South Carolina–and said this time around has been “the best camp I’ve been part of.”

Part of that comes with experience, but part of it too is Rattler’s fondness for South Carolina’s new offensive system under Dowell Loggains.

“Offensively, I love everything we’re doing. I don’t feel any growing pains myself. The group has been gelling. We’re playing fast,” Rattler said. “We’re making a ton of explosive plays and touchdowns, way more than last year for sure. I feel like it’s a complete turn. But we have to come out, do it and prove it.”

Rattler played last season–his first with the Gamecocks–in Marcus Satterfield’s system to varying degrees of success.

Rattler–and the offense as a whole–was largely inconsistent over the first 10 games before he and the entire unit exploded in wins over Tennessee and Clemson.

South Carolina brought in Loggains to lead the offense with Satterfield at Nebraska, and Rattler has liked what he’s seen so far.

The Gamecocks aren’t a finished product by any stretch, but Rattler saw signs of progress coming out of the team’s first scrimmage of the preseason.

“I like everything. We were explosive and threw for a lot of yards. We got down in the red zone and got to finish at a higher rate down there,” he said. “But we were explosive, had a lot of explosives, protected the ball, didn’t have any turnovers. That’s a great thing.”

Rattler started the season completing 62.1 percent of his passes and averaging 7.2 yards per attempt through his first seven games against FBS opponents. He had four more interceptions (7) than touchdowns (3) in that span.

In his last four–when South Carolina went 3-1 with wins over the Vols and Tigers–Rattler completed 71.1 percent of his passes while averaging 8.9 yards per attempt. He had eight touchdowns to just two interceptions.

He comes back now to try and take another step forward in Loggains’ system and help South Carolina take another step forward.

“Just working on everything with my game. I feel like mechanically I’m sound. Obviously consistency with protecting the ball. That was probably the biggest thing,” Rattler said. “But other than that, I’m going to play my game. I trust in what Dowell’s doing. This offense suits me a lot better and I’m enjoying it a lot.”

South Carolina is replacing a good amount of production from last season and will rely fairly heavily on freshmen and newcomers this year.

And Rattler sees a lot in that talented albeit inexperienced group currently.

“The new guys are doing a great job. They’re gelling with the group at a good pace so far. Throughout the summer they put a lot of good work in that didn’t go unnoticed,” Rattler said. “We noticed it every day. They put in great work and so far through camp they’re doing a great job.”
