South Carolina signee George Wolkow selected in MLB Draft
The first member of South Carolina’s 2023 signing class is officially off the board in left-handed back George Wolkow.
Wolkow was taken in the seventh round by the Chicago White Sox at No. 209 overall. The slot value for this pick is $248,300.
The left-handed hitting third baseman entered the draft as a top 100 prospect from nearly every major outlet and he goes fairly high in the draft.
The Gamecocks’ signee reclassified from the 2024 to the 2023 class and ultimately hit .363 overall this season with a 1.211 OPS and seven home runs. He had 32 RBI and 33 strikeouts to 32 walks.

Wolkow impressed a ton of front-office personnel during his time at the MLB Draft Combine last month.
He now has a decision to make in terms of signing a pro deal or coming to school, something he likely knew was coming after the high school career he had.
“Really, making sure it’s the right opportunity developmental-wise with whatever organization it is as well,” he said. “I’m not a guy just selling out and reclassifying for the draft. For me, I’m completely fine going to school and coming out three years later. It’s got to be a great opportunity than an SEC education and time playing in the SEC.”
South Carolina is coming off a quality season in 2023 that included the program’s first 40-win season and top 16 seed since 2016 and first Super Regional appearance since 2018.

It’s been a hectic offseason for South Carolina from staff turnover to roster additions over the last few weeks. Liberty’s Matt Williams replaced Justin Parker as the Gamecocks’ pitching coach with Parker leaving to take the same position at Mississippi State.
Monte Lee will be back for year two as the Gamecocks’ recruiting coordinator and associate head coach under Mark Kingston. South Carolina is also adding Joey Holcomb as the team’s third paid assistant, coming over after a pair of years at Campbell.
South Carolina’s been busy in the transfer portal, too, bringing in Austin Brinling (North Florida), Kennedy Jones (UNC-G), Blake Jackson (Charlotte) and Dalton Reeves (Presbyterian). Versatile infielder Parker Noland is coming over from Vanderbilt while Tyler Causey comes from North Carolina.
The Gamecocks have two reigning Pitchers of the Year committed in Ty Good (Charleston) and Matt Duffy (Canisius) with Garrett Gainey (Liberty) and Tyler Dean (Virginia Tech) also on board.
