South Carolina softball coach Ashley Chastain Woodard has done a tremendous job in her first year back at her alma mater. The Gamecocks are just one victory shy of crossing the 40-win threshold for just the third time since 2004. With the SEC Tournament and NCAA Tournament remaining, reaching that mark seems to be a foregone conclusion.

The SEC Tournament is this week, and the top-15 Gamecocks will use their trip to Athens to compete for more than just a conference title. With a good showing at the SECT, South Carolina could solidify its spot as a first-round host and find its way into a top-8 national host seed in the NCAA Tournament.

According to the latest bracketology from Softball America, USC is right on the cusp of doing so.

In the outlet’s pre-SEC Tournament projections, South Carolina earned the nation’s No. 9 overall seed. That is one spot away from being in position to guarantee hosting a Super Regional (pending a Regional win first).

In Softball America’s bracket, the Gamecocks will host a Regional in Columbia that also includes the Virginia Cavaliers (2-seed), Omaha Mavericks (3-seed), and Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens (4-seed). To open the 2025 season, Carolina went 2-0 against UVA in Columbia.

If USC handles its business at home, Softball America has the team traveling to Baton Rouge, Louisiana for the Super Regional (assuming LSU wins its Regional over UCF, Nevada, and the Southland Conference winner between McNeese State and Southeastern Louisiana). South Carolina defeated LSU two games out of three (the same format as the Supers) in Baton Rouge in March.

Winning through the Super Regional round would push the Gamecocks into the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Back in the program’s pre-NCAA days, South Carolina softball often made the AIAW Women’s College World Series. However, since competing at the NCAA Division-I level, the Gamecocks have made just three College World Series. They haven’t made it all the way to OKC since 1997.

For now, though, Chastain Woodard’s squad will begin its postseason Wednesday with an SEC Tournament contest against Alabama. The Gamecocks defeated a ranked Crimson Tide team twice last weekend. The Gamecocks and Crimson Tide will play at 8:00 p.m. in a game broadcast on SEC Network. The ESPN app also will make the showdown available via streaming.

The winner of Wednesday’s contest will face off against the Texas A&M Aggies at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. That quarterfinal game will also be televised on SEC Network and streamed on the ESPN app.
