South Carolina softball dropped an extra-innings rivalry game against Clemson in a top-20 showdown on Tuesday night. The 2-1 defeat means the Palmetto State programs split the regular season series. However, along the way, the Gamecocks earned a spot on the SportsCenter Top 10.

Specifically, senior outfielder Emily Vinson landed at No. 3 on Wednesday’s edition of the Top 10. In the bottom of the third inning in Clemson, Tigers sophomore Julia Knowler hit a ball deep the opposite way. It looked like Knowler could have a home run to left, but Vinson brought it back from over the wall. In the process, she saved USC three runs as Clemson had two runners on base.

In the end, Vinson’s grab allowed the Gamecocks to hold on and push the contest into extra innings. Though Carolina lost, the game would have been over sooner without her efforts.

A former All-State performer at Lugoff-Elgin High School, Vinson spent the first three years of her college career at Longwood in Virginia. Now, in her final year of eligibility, she is back home in head coach Ashley Chastain Woodard’s first season at the helm of the Gamecock program.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Vinson earned a collegiate Rawlings Gold Glove for her outfield work while at Longwood. She was also a Scholar-Athlete All-American that same year.

So far this season, Vinson has played in 42 of 43 total games for the Gamecocks. She’s continued playing high-level defense and has chipped in on offense with a positive BB/K ratio and seven steals.

South Carolina softball will play again this weekend in a three-game set against the Kentucky Wildcats in Columbia. First pitch for the opener against Kentucky is slated for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Fans can stream the contest on SEC Network+. Sunday’s game two will begin at 6:00 p.m. and also will stream on SEC Network+. The series finale will start at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Because of the lighter schedule on Monday, the game will broadcast on SEC Network and stream on the ESPN app.
