South Carolina softball has had a tremendous season in its first year with Ashley Chastain Woodard at the helm. The former Gamecock pitcher has led her alma mater to a 40-15 record so far this season. The Gamecocks have a chance to earn a top-8 overall seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

Hosting a Regional as a top-16 team is a foregone conclusion for USC. However, the Gamecocks are in the middle of a fierce discussion regarding the nation’s top eight seeds. Before the SEC Tournament, South Carolina was just on the outside looking in, owning the projected No. 9 seed from Softball America. Since winning a game in Athens and having the third-most Quad I victories in the country, the outlet had bumped Carolina up a spot to No. 8.

On Sunday, Softball America released its final bracketology before Sunday night’s selection show. In it, South Carolina slotted in at No. 10, two spots below the hosting line. The UCLA Bruins and LSU Tigers (the teams viewed as the top competition for the 8th spot) sit at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively.

If the projection holds up, the Gamecocks will host a Regional, but if they hold serve at home, they will travel for the Super Regional round. Columbia is matched up with Austin. That means that if both teams make it through their home Regionals, South Carolina will travel to Texas for the Supers with a spot in the Women’s College World Series on the line.
