South Carolina’s star defensive back Cam Smith has officially entered his name into the 2023 NFL draft pool.

The Blythewood, South Carolina, native has been an anchor on defense ever since breaking into the starting lineup as a redshirt freshman.

Smith announced his move via his social media early Friday evening.

Smith’s best performance came against Tennessee, where he locked down the nation’s leading pass catcher Jalin Hyatt. He held Hyatt to 6 receptions for a mere 65 yards and no touchdowns.

Smith said in his open letter to fans via his Twitter:

“First I would like to thank God for the opportunity to play football and receive an education from the University of South Carolina. I’ve always dreamed of playing in the SEC, and the University of South Carolina has allowed me to have the best experience both in the classroom and on the football field. I want to thank coach Beamer for believing in me and my potential and helping me prepare for the next step in my life. I would like to thank my parent for their sacrifices in order for me to be where I am today.

“I would like to thank the athletic trainers, the equipment managers, and everyone in the football facility. The people I interact with every day is what makes coming to the University of South Carolina to play football so special. I had many great memories during my time here at South Carolina and I will always be a Gamecock. I hope to continue to make Gamecock nation proud throughout my career. I will forever miss running out of the tunnel on Saturdays with my brothers in front of 80,000 fans. I do know that it is time for me to move on to the next chapter in my life.
