Shane Beamer evaluates how to overcome struggles on offense

After scoring a season-low six points in a loss to Florida, South Carolina coach Shane Beamer is working to make sure his offense comes more prepared this week.
The Gamecocks struggled to hang on to the ball against the Gators, surrendering three fumbles, one of which led to a Florida touchdown on the ensuing drive. In his Tuesday press conference, Beamer said the key to getting better isn’t making sweeping changes, but focusing on what went wrong and working on improving it in practice.
“I think each week’s different,” the coach said. “You always after each game kind of step back and say, ‘OK, what were the issues yesterday and why were they the issues?’ We couldn’t hold onto the ball and maybe were turning the ball over too much? Well, maybe we need to spend more time on ball security, which we do a ton of in practice already to begin with. Were we making a lot of mental errors and guys just didn’t play with confidence? Well, maybe we had too much in and their minds were cluttered.
“That’s not just offense, that’s defense and special teams. We do that every week as well. So, I think that’s the biggest thing. Every Sunday, win or lose, we take stock in what happened the day before and try to learn from it and make corrections and continue to build upon the thing we did well.”

It’s not just fixing last week’s mistakes, though. Shane Beamer said the offense must also prepare based on its opponent, and they have two huge challenges in the next couple of weeks.
On Saturday, they’ll run into No. 5 Tennessee in their final game of SEC play. After that, they head to Clemson for their annual rivalry game against the No. 9 Tigers to close the season.
“It’s also, ‘Who’s the next opponent?’” Beamer said. “Sort of the problems that they present and how do we combat that as well. What are some areas that we want to attack and how do we do that? Then it’s also just not constantly trying to reinvent the wheel either. Let’s continue to try and raise the floor of where we are and continue to be better. It might mean, ‘Tweak this, tweak that,’ but it’s not just all of a sudden wholesale changes every single week schematically and things like that. We stick to what we are right now and it hasn’t been good enough, but we just continue to try and do it better week after week.”
With the season nearing a close, South Carolina ranks 11th in the SEC in total offense and ninth with 28.6 points per game. They will hope they can correct some of their mistakes ahead of a 7 p.m. ET kickoff on Saturday against Tennessee.
