South Carolina ties program record for most SEC losses as Auburn finishes off sweep
South Carolina will head back to Columbia with a chance to make history. That is, history for the wrong reasons, though.
The Gamecocks suffered an 11-3 loss to No. 8 Auburn in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday. It’s the sixth time they’ve been swept this year, five being in SEC play.
With this latest loss, South Carolina (26-26, 5-22 SEC) has now tied the program record for most SEC losses. The 2019 Gamecocks, who went 8-22, own the worst conference record in program history.
The current Gamecocks will need to sweep No. 3 LSU next weekend to tie the 8-22 mark. On the other hand, if they were to get swept again, they would become only the second team ever, along with Missouri this year, to finish 5-25.

Picking up where it left off from a 10-run showing in game one, South Carolina took an immediate 3-0 lead with an RBI double by Jase Woita and a two-run homer from Evan Stone.
Much like earlier in the day, though, the lead wouldn’t last for long. Dylan Eskew gave up a two-run homer to Bub Terrell in the second. Auburn broke through for four runs in the fifth to take control of the game for good.
Eskew only lasted four innings before being pulled. The right-hander was charged with six runs on nine hits and served up three free passes, two on hit-by-pitches.

Parker Marlatt was the only Gamecock pitcher in the series to pitch a scoreless outing. He only threw one inning on Friday with 15 pitches.
Once Marlatt came out, Jarvis Evans Jr. and Brendan Sweeney struggled to follow suit as the Tigers’ lead widened. Evans gave up two runs in two innings, and Sweeney added three more runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
Overall, South Carolina’s pitching staff plunked 11 batters this weekend. It allowed 46 runs in three games. During its six-game losing streak, it has given up a total of 85 runs.
