What to Know about Vanderbilt
- This year’s Vanderbilt team is not the typical Commodores squad. They are good. Vandy already is bowl-eligible and could earn their first winning season since 2013.
- Vanderbilt is 6-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play. They are 4-1 at home this year.
- The Gamecocks won last year’s game 47-6 and won 38-27 in the last contest in Nashville (2022).
- Clark Lea is in his fourth year at the helm of the black and gold. He played at Vanderbilt in the early-to-mid-2000s.
- Diego Pavia is the real deal at quarterback. The dual-threat quarterback transferred in this offseason from New Mexico State where he orchestrated big upsets over Auburn and Liberty. Prior to playing for the Aggies, he won a junior college national championship at New Mexico Military Institute.
- Even with Pavia, the Commodore offense ranks below South Carolina’s in the SEC statistical hierarchy, averaging just 338 yards per game. The defense gives up the same exact yardage amount and is ranked 10th in the SEC.
- For most of the year, Vanderbilt did a good job of not turning the football over on offense. However, the ‘Dores gave the ball away three times in their close loss to Texas.
- As of Wednesday, defensive linemen Zaylin Wood and Bradley Mann, offensive lineman Grayson Morgan, EDGE Boubacar Diakite, and cornerback Mark Davis are listed as “out” for Saturday’s contest.
