South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley has led her Gamecocks to a perfect record since a November loss to UCLA. Thanks to that strong stretch of play, USC trails only the Bruins in the latest AP rankings. This week, Carolina won its only game, and now, there’s just one more game on the schedule before SEC play begins following the New Year.

South Carolina Gamecocks overcome slow start to dominate Charleston Southern

Coach Staley was not happy with her team’s 1st half against Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers led after the 1st quarter and only trailed by nine at the halftime intermission. According to freshman forward Joyce Edwards, Staley wrote a big question mark on the marker board to display her displeasure with the afternoon’s proceedings.

The coaching ploy worked. The Gamecocks bounced back in a big way in the 2nd half by outscoring CSU 48-20.

Joyce Edwards carried the day. The freshman had a career-high 20 points on 6-for-9 shooting and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. She was the only South Carolina player who scored in double figures.

What’s next for South Carolina women’s basketball this week

Because of Christmas break, the schedule is a little lighter this time of year. The Gamecocks will only play one time over the next week and a half. Conference play begins in January, but South Carolina has one more out-of-conference contest to play ahead of the SEC opener against Missouri.

On Sunday, December 29th, USC will welcome the in-state Wofford Terriers to Colonial Life Arena. The Gamecocks and Terriers will play at 2:00 p.m. SEC Network will broadcast the game, and the ESPN app will stream the contest.
