South Carolina unveiled the statue of A’ja Wilson on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, 2021. In the two years since then, the Gamecocks are undefeated and have seldom been challenged under the statue’s watchful eye.
The statue was dedicated on January 18, 2021, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. The general public couldn’t attend, and only select people could attend the sunny but cold ceremony.
That night, in front of a socially distanced crowd of 3,500, South Carolina routed Arkansas 104-82 thanks to 26 points, 16 rebounds, and six blocks from Aliyah Boston. Three nights later Boston recorded a triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 blocks in a win over Georgia.

Maybe she needs a statue too, folks joked.
The statue quickly became the signature feature of Colonial Life Arena. It’s where fans – and opposing players – meet to take pictures. When recruits visit campus the statue is a mandatory stop, even for players with no intention of playing for South Carolina.
