South Carolina women's basketball alum Allisha Gray to defend crowns in 3-point contest and skills challenge during All-Star weekend

On Tuesday, the WNBA announced the fields for All-Star weekend’s 3-point contest and skills challenge. Back to defend her crown(s), South Carolina women’s basketball alum Allisha Gray will participate in both events.
Last year, Gray, who is an MVP candidate for the Atlanta Dream, was the first player ever to win both the 3-point contest and skills challenge. Both New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu and San Antonio Silver Stars guard Becky Hammon have won the two events. However, neither won them in the same All-Star weekend. South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley also won both events in different years. The skills challenge was in a different format back then. Gray bested New York Liberty forward Jonquel Jones in the 3-point contest. She knocked off Sophie Cunningham (then with the Phoenix Mercury) in the skills challenge final.

This year, Gray will match up against Ionescu, Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark, Los Angeles Sparks guard Kelsey Plum, and Washington Mystics guard Sonia Citron in the 3-point contest. In the skills challenge, Gray will face off against New York Liberty guard Natasha Cloud, Seattle Storm guards Skylar Diggins and Erica Wheeler, and Minnesota Lynx guard Courtney Williams. She will look to become just the second player to win the 3-point contest more than once and the first to repeat as skills challenge champion.
Fans can tune in to watch both events on ESPN on Friday night, July 18th, at 8:00 p.m. Then, on Saturday, July 19th, Gray will join former Gamecocks A’ja Wilson and Aliyah Boston in the WNBA All-Star Game. Gray will play on a team captained by Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier. Wilson and Boston will play on a team captained by Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark. All three former USC stars will start.
