South Carolina women's basketball: An explainer on the Quad system
Each week, Kevin Miller updates South Carolina’s standing in the NET rankings and makes note of South Carolina’s Quad 1 wins. Let’s dive into what the Quad system actually is.
The NET, first used in men’s basketball in 2018, replaced the RPI in women’s basketball in 2020 as the primary “sorting tool” used by the NCAA tournament selection committee for selection and seeding.
Previously, the NET determined the quality of wins and losses, but this season women’s basketball began using the Quad system. Quads have been a familiar part of men’s basketball since 2017, but this is the first year they have been used in women’s basketball.
Unlike the NET, which is the same system in men’s and women’s basketball (although it wasn’t always), Quads use a different range based on historical data that indicates it is easier to win on the road in women’s basketball. The Quads take into account the NET ranking of the opponent and where the game was played.
Quad 1 – Home vs 1-25, Neutral site vs 1-35, Away vs 1-45
Quad 2 – Home vs 26-55, Neutral site vs 36-55, Away vs 46-80
Quad 3 – Home vs 56-90, Neutral site vs 66-105, Away vs 81-130
Quad 4 – Home vs 91+, Neutral site vs 106+, Away vs 131+

Quads and the NET are not the only tools used by the selection committee, but they are the two most important. Ultimately, it all comes down to the eye test. Anecdotally, they have always seemed to reward quality wins more than they punish losses.
Once again, the selection committee will have two in-season top-16 seed reveals. They will reveal the top 16 seeds if the tournament starts that day.
The first reveal is on Feb. 16 during College GameDay (which will be in Columbia). The broadcast begins begins at noon on ABC.
The second reveal is on Feb. 27 at 6:30 on ESPN2.
Selection Sunday is on March 16. New this season, the selection committee will release the full seed list of all 68 teams when the bracket is announced on Selection Sunday.
