This week, South Carolina women’s basketball played their closest game of the SEC season but still managed to hold on to win on the road against a ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers team. Then, the Gamecocks retired A’ja Wilson’s No. 22 jersey with a more comfortable home win over Auburn. The victories pushed USC’s record to 9-0, and since their November defeat at the hands of the UCLA Bruins, Carolina has won 16 straight.

When the Associated Press released their updated top 25 on Monday, South Carolina held tight at No. 2. Because UCLA, the country’s last undefeated squad, had a bye, the Bruins played just once this week. UCLA’s win over Minnesota (rightly) kept the Bruins on top of the rankings. For the first time in over a month, though, UCLA earned every first-place vote.

UCLA has been No. 1 since knocking off South Carolina before Thanksgiving. At 21-0, though, Cori Close’s team will face tough tests over the next two weeks against Ohio State, Oregon, Southern Cal, and Michigan State.

If one of those teams takes down UCLA, then the Gamecocks likely will claim the top spot in the rankings with undefeated play of their own. South Carolina has the top overall resume in the country and will only strengthen their metrics if they win against two more top-5 teams (Texas and UConn) over the next two weeks.

You can see the entire AP top 25 below (first-place votes in parentheses):

  1. UCLA Bruins (32)

This week, South Carolina women’s basketball will hit the road for two games away from Colonial Life Arena.

First, the Gamecocks will head to Athens, Georgia for a Thursday night affair against the Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. USC and UGA will play on SEC Network, and the ESPN app also will make the game available for streaming. Compared to South Carolina’s strong play, Georgia is struggling; the Bulldogs enter the week on a six-game losing streak in SEC play.

Then, the No. 4 Texas Longhorns will be out for revenge on Sunday as South Carolina will be in Austin for a rematch with Texas at 2:00 p.m. ESPN will broadcast the top 10 matchup, while the ESPN app makes it available for streaming. Vic Schaefer’s team hasn’t lost since their lopsided defeat in Columbia in January.
