South Carolina women's basketball signee named McDonald's All-American

South Carolina women’s basketball commitment Ayla McDowell is a McDonald’s All-American. After earning her nomination for the game recently, McDowell officially made the 24-player group on Monday. She will play for the West Team.

McDowell ranks as On3’s No. 25 overall player in the country. As the No. 8 wing, too, she possesses the size and athleticism to make an impact at multiple positions for future versions of the Gamecocks.
South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley has spoken glowingly of McDowell since she signed with the Gamecocks. The current top coach in women’s college basketball recently said she believes McDowell will “one day be a captain” of the elite USC program. Coach Staley also praised McDowell’s two-way ability and her work ethic.
The 6’2″ prospect will join the South Carolina women’s basketball program next summer, extending the team’s streak of McDonald’s All-Americans. The Gamecocks have signed at least one player from the prestigious all-star game every year since 2018. During that time, several other former McDonald’s All-Americans have transferred to Columbia, as well.
McDowell is the 26th McDonald’s All-American to sign with the Gamecocks out of high school (and the 21st to sign with Dawn Staley at USC).

A possible 27th is still on the board, though.
Versatile 5-star Agot Makeer also made the McDonald’s All-American team as part of the East Team. From Canada but now playing at Montverde Academy, she is one of the top uncommitted players in the 2025 cycle. The 6’1″ athlete will decide between South Carolina, UConn, and Michigan State.
Technically, the nation’s No. 1 player Aaliyah Chavez is a South Carolina target, too, but she is expected to commit elsewhere. Also a Texas native, she will play with McDowell on the West Team.
The 2025 edition of the McDonald’s All-American Game will take place on Tuesday, April 1st at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. ESPN will broadcast the festivities, which will begin at 6:30 p.m.
