South Carolina earned the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and will host a first round game on Friday.

The Gamecocks will play 16 seed Norfolk State. The other teams in Columbia are #8 South Florida and #9 Marquette. The winners of Friday’s first round games will meet on Sunday.

South Carolina will make its 19th NCAA Tournament appearance and 11th consecutive bid. It is the seventh time South Carolina has been a one seed and third season in a row. South Carolina has reached the Sweet 16 in every tournament since 2014.

South Carolina is seeking to become the tenth team to go undefeated for the entire season and go wire-to-wire as number one for the second consecutive season. The Gamecocks have made the Final Four each of the past two seasons, losing to Stanford in the national semifinal in 2021. The 2020 tournament was canceled.

For the first time, there are only two region hosts, Greenville and Seattle. #1 Indiana is also in the Greenville region (called “Greenville 2”), but would not play the Gamecocks in Greenville. Virginia Tech (Seattle 3) and Stanford (Seattle 4) are the number one seeds. Following the S-curve, Greenville 1 is matched with Seattle 4, so South Carolina and Stanford could meet in the national semifinal again.

The two seed in South Carolina’s region is Maryland. The Gamecocks won at Maryland 81-56 in the first week of the season. The other two seeds are Utah (Greenville 2), UConn (Seattle 3), and Iowa (Seattle 4).

Seven SEC teams made the tournament. Aside from South Carolina, they are LSU (#3, Greenville 2), Tennessee (#4, Seattle 3) Ole Miss (#8, Seattle 4), Georgia (#10, Seattle 4), Alabama (#10, Seattle 3), and Mississippi State (#11 First Four, Greenville 1).
