Two more Gamecocks make FIBA AmeriCup rosters

Last week, South Carolina women’s basketball star sophomore Joyce Edwards earned a spot on USA Basketball’s FIBA AmeriCup roster. On Monday, two more Gamecocks earned their way onto AmeriCup rosters. Team Brazil (Basquete Brasil) announced their squad for the June 28th-July 6th tournament in Santiago, Chile. Both former Gamecock Kamilla Cardoso and incoming USC freshman Ayla McDowell earned spots on the team.
For Cardoso, playing in the AmeriCup will be nothing new. The former Gamecock All-American was the tournament’s MVP back in 2023 as Brazil beat the United States in the championship.
McDowell, who signed with South Carolina as a five-star prospect in the class of 2025, will be making her first AmeriCup appearance, though she did participate in the U18 version of the event last year.

During her South Carolina women’s basketball career, Cardoso was one of the best post players the Gamecocks have ever had. The 6-7 center backed up Aliyah Boston for two years but still played a huge role on a National Championship team and a Final Four squad. Then, as a senior, Cardoso was the top option on the Gamecocks’ undefeated title team. She earned All-American honors, some National Defensive Player of the Year recognition, and the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player award.
McDowell has arrived on campus and is a candidate for early playing time. A talented and versatile player, she can play multiple positions and is capable of contributing on both ends of the court.
