The four FIBA Women’s Olympic qualifying tournaments take place this weekend and the Gamecocks are well represented.

Current Gamecocks Kamilla Cardoso will miss South Carolina’s next two games while she competes for the Brazilian national team. Former Gamecocks Aliyah Boston (United States) and Laeitica Amihere (Canada) are also on their national teams.

Sixteen teams advanced to the qualifying tournaments. Each tournament consists of round-robin play, and the top three finishers qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Two countries have already qualified for the Olympics: France (host nation) and the United States (2022 World Cup gold medal).

Because it is already qualified, the United States is not sending its “A” team. Players like A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, and Brittney Griner declined to participate. Former Gamecocks Allisha Gray was part of the training camp, but did not make the final roster.

Canada is seeking its fourth consecutive Olympic appearance. Amihere was on the Canadian team that participated in the Tokyo Olympics, becoming the first active Gamecock basketball player to also appear in the Olympics.

Brazil missed the Tokyo Olympics, ending a streak of seven consecutive appearances. Brazil won a silver medal in 1996 and bronze in 2000. Cardoso led Brazil to an AmeriCup gold medal last summer, earning tournament MVP honors. That victory qualified Brazil for the qualifying tournament.
