The 2024 Olympics in Paris will have a significant Gamecock feel.

Aja Wilson is making her second Olympic appearance for USA Basketball, the gold medal favorite. Laeticia Amihere is also making her second appearance for Canada, a long shot to medal.

Dawn Staley will add to her Olympic experience as a member of the Presidential Delegation led by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.

Staley won gold medals as a player in 1996, 2000, and 2004, when she was also the American flag-bearer.  She was an assistant coach on the gold-medal-winning teams in 2008 and 2016 and then led the Americans to gold as head coach in 2021.

The Presidential Delegation attends the Opening Ceremony to support the athletes but does not participate.

Instead of a traditional Parade of Nations in which each country marches into a stadium, the athletes and officials will be brought by boat down the Seine River to the Jardins du Trocadéro, where the Olympic cauldron will be lit.

Teams enter alphabetically by country name in French, except for the current and future host countries. Canada is expected to enter 37th, after Cameroon and before Cape Verde.

Australia, as the 2032 host country, will enter second from last. As the host of the 2028 Olympics, the USA will enter next from last, followed by host country France. You’ll have quite a wait to get to the Americans.

The Opening Ceremony airs from 1:30 pm ET to 6:00 pm ET on Friday, July 26, on NBC. The Ceremony will be replayed at 7:30 pm ET.

Group play begins on July 28 and continues until August 4. Each team plays a round-robin schedule against the other three teams in the group. The first and second-place teams, along with the two best third-place teams, advance to the elimination rounds.

The United States is in Group C and Canada is in Group B, so they couldn’t meet until the knockout rounds. Games during the group stage will be played at Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille. Lille is about an hour’s train ride away from Paris near the Belgian border.

The United States has only lost one game in group play in Olympic history: 84-71 to Japan in its first-ever game in 1976. The US has only lost three games total and is on a 55-game winning streak.

Canada has never medaled at the Olympics and went 1-2 in group play in Tokyo. Amihere averaged 4.7 points and 4.0 rebounds.

At the Tokyo Olympics, Wilson averaged 16.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks. She tied for the team lead in scoring, was the leader in blocks, and second in rebounding scoring and blocks and was second in rebounding.
