South Carolina women’s basketball star Joyce Edwards has earned the SEC Freshman of the Week honor. The Southeastern Conference office announced the news on Tuesday afternoon.

Edwards’ selection comes on the heels of two stellar performances last week. The true freshman Palmetto State native helped guide her Gamecocks to a pair of lopsided victories over ranked opponents. First, South Carolina beat the No. 19 Alabama Crimson Tide by 18 points on the road. Then, USC dominated the No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners 101-60 at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia.

Along the way, Edwards scored 21 points on 7-for-10 shooting against Alabama and 17 points on 8-for-10 from the floor against Oklahoma. Just those numbers alone could have warranted her weekly award win, but Edwards chipped in 10 rebounds and solid defense in the two ranked wins, as well.

Despite being in her first collegiate season, Joyce Edwards has been a difference-maker for Dawn Staley’s team. She leads the team’s balanced scoring attack with 12.1 points per game. She also leads the team with 23 total steals. She’s accomplishing all of that in just 20.3 points per game while coming off the bench.

The No. 2-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks will face one of their stiffest tests of the season this week. With College GameDay in town, USC will host the undefeated and No. 5-ranked LSU Tigers on Thursday. ESPN will broadcast both the top-5 matchup and the pregame GameDay show. The ESPN app will make it all available via streaming.
