South Carolina women’s basketball standout Joyce Edwards won the SEC Freshman of the Week award for the second week in a row. The Southeastern Conference announced the news on Tuesday. This was the third time Edwards earned the honor this season.

Edwards scored 14 points, pulled down four rebounds, added a steal and a block, and drew four fouls against LSU. The Tigers entered the contest undefeated, but thanks in large part to Edwards’ team-leading scoring output (including a quick four points in the 4th quarter that seemed to put the game out of reach heading into the final period), South Carolina won by double digits. The victory extended the Gamecocks’ win streak over LSU to 17 consecutive games.

Edwards followed up her strong game against LSU with an even better showing on the road against Tennessee. In what proved to be a tighter game than expected, Edwards led all scorers with 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting. She also secured five rebounds and again posted a defensive effort with a block and a steal. South Carolina won 70-63 as they turned to Edwards to lead the way late. The Tennessee contest was the fourth in a row in which the freshman led USC in scoring.

The former 5-star prospect is living up to expectations in Columbia. In fact, earlier this week, South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley remarked that she believed Edwards could be “the best player in college basketball one day.”

The Gamecocks will have a bit of a break over the next week. South Carolina will have five days off, then they will meet up with the Auburn Tigers at home. The Gamecocks and Tigers will tip at Noon inside Colonial Life Arena. SEC Network will broadcast the contest, while the ESPN app streams the game.
