Kamilla Cardoso will compete in the FIBA South American Women’s Championship.  Cardoso is a Brazilian senior national team member. The tournament is from August 1-6 and will be held in San Luis, Argentina.

The participating countries are Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uraguay, and Venezuela. Brazil is in Group B with Chile, Uruguay, and Colombia. The top four teams qualify for the 2023 AmeriCup Tournament.

Brazil opens play against Colombia. On August 2, Brazil plays Uruguay, and on Wednesday Brazil plays Chile. All three games are at 6:30 pm ET (San Luis is an hour ahead of eastern time). August 4 is a rest day, and the games on Friday and Saturday are the semifinals and finals determined by the standings. All of the games are supposed to be streamed live on youtube.com/FIBA.

Brazil has won the tournament 34 times, the most of any country, but Argentina captured the last championship in 2018.

FIBA participation

Brazil did not qualify for the Tokyo Olympics or the 2022 World Cup, but Cardoso is one of the rising stars on the team. She was named to the All-Tournament team at the World Cup qualifying tournament in Belgrade, Serbia, after she averaged 11.3 points and 8.7 rebounds while shooting 62% from the floor. Cardoso had to miss three games with South Carolina while competing in the tournament back in February. Cardoso has been in Brazil for most of the summer, training with the national team instead of going back and forth between Brazil and the United States.

6-7 Cardoso averaged 5.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks last season. She had one of her best games of the season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against Miami when she chipped in 11 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks. Cardoso transferred to South Carolina after one season at Syracuse, where she was first-team All-ACC and the ACC Freshman and Defensive Player of the Year. She averaged 13.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks that season. She was also on the 2021 Brazilian AmeriCup team that took home a bronze medal.

Cardoso is one of two current Gamecocks competing for her national team. Laeticia Amihere is a member of the Canadian senior national team. She played in the Tokyo Olympics and also missed time last season for the World Cup qualifying tournament. Canada qualified for the World Cup, which is from September 22-October 1 in Sydney, Australia. Amihere will likely compete in the World Cup as well. It will interfere with preseason camp but Amihere won’t miss any games in order to play in the World Cup.
