South Carolina women's basketball: MiLaysia Fulwiley and Joyce Edwards star in blowout at Vanderbilt

MiLaysia Fulwiley and Joyce Edwards each had career games and no. 6 South Carolina dominated the second half to beat Vanderbilt 82-54.

Fulwiley entered the game midway through the first quarter and quickly scored six points during an 8-0 run that put South Carolina up by double digits. South Carolina shot just 5-21 in the second quarter, but Vanderbilt had no answer for Fulwiley. 

She scored 15 of her career-high tying 24 points in the first half to help preserve a 10-point halftime lead. 

Khamil Pierre scored the first four points of the third quarter, and Dawn Staley quickly brought Edwards in off the bench. Edwards scored five straight points and 11 total during a decisive 16-1 run.

During that run, South Carolina turned defense into offense. It got nine points in transition and six points off free throws.

Edwards finished with 17 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. She also had three assists, three steals, and two blocks.

The game featured the two front-runners for SEC Freshman of the Year, Edwards and Vanderbilt’s Mikayla Blakes. Blakes came into the game averaging 23.4 points, but South Carolina held her to 19 points on 5-15 shooting, with seven rebounds and three turnovers.

One game doesn’t decide the award, but Edwards won Sunday’s battle. 

South Carolina shot 63.0% in the second half to finish the game hitting 46.2%. Vanderbilt shot just 30.4%. Te-Hina Paopao added 13 points. 

The Gamecocks finished plus-12 rebounding and scored 23 points off of 17 turnovers. The Commodores managed just three points off of 13 turnovers. 

South Carolina shot just 5-19 from three and 17-27 from the line.

South Carolina led by as much as 30 in the fourth quarter. … Maryam Dauda had three points and seven rebounds in 12 productive minutes. … Pierre finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. … There were 23 fouls called on South Carolina and 22 called on Vanderbilt, but nobody fouled out. … All 12 Gamecocks played.
