Last spring, South Carolina women’s basketball guard MiLaysia Fulwiley made some history. As one of the only female collegiate athletes ever to sign with a major shoe brand, the Columbia native earned a spot representing Steph Curry’s branch of Under Armour, Curry Brand. Fulwiley has since released a custom Curry shoe, a player’s edition variation of the Curry 12s called the FamLAY.

At NBA All-Star Weekend, Curry spoke to the media about Fulwiley and her inclusion at Curry Brand. NBC Sports’ Natalie Esquire asked the Golden State Warriors star about why Under Armour signed Fulwiley.

“MiLaysia, the way she carries herself–obviously as a basketball player–but on and off the court, we see a lot of potential in her. She believes in what we’re doing,” Curry explained.

Fulwiley, who also is the first collegiate athlete signed to Curry Brand, is a dynamic scoring guard just like the shoe brand’s namesake. The duo’s connection didn’t begin with their business partnership, however. The Gamecock sophomore attended some of Curry’s camps and joined the Team Curry AAU squad in high school.

According to the future Hall of Famer, Fulwiley impressed him then, but she’s continued to do so in college. “Obviously, [she’s] at South Carolina, doing amazing things–winning a championship in her freshman year–and trying to continue to get better and keep pushing the envelope on what she can accomplish in her career.”

Fulwiley’s nearly limitless potential for brilliance on the court is obvious to see. Her elite athleticism and ballhandling ability are a rare combination in the sport. However, Curry didn’t just pick the South Carolina star because of her abilities. Joining Curry Brand is reserved only for those with a strong overall resume as a player and as a person.

“As you build out your roster, you want to have just good people that truly understand [what’s important],” said Curry. “One, they want to be great on the court. Two, they stand for something, represent something off the court, and are always looking for ways to impact the community. She checks all those boxes.”

Fulwiley and South Carolina will be back on the court again on the court again on Thursday against Arkansas. USC, though, will be looking to bounce back from a loss on Sunday against the UConn Huskies. The Gamecocks and Razorbacks will tip off at 7:00 p.m. in Colonial Life Arena. Fans can tune in to watch the game on SEC Network, while the ESPN app makes it available for streaming.
