South Carolina women's basketball guard earns national player of the week selection

This week, South Carolina women’s basketball guard MiLaysia Fulwiley had her best two-game stretch of the season. Against Arkansas and Vanderbilt–with her USC squad needing to bounce back after back-to-back Sunday losses to Texas and UConn–Fulwiley did enough to earn one of the USBWA’s National Player of the Week honors. Fulwiley joins Oklahoma’s Raegan Beers, Southern Cal’s Juju Watkins, Columbia’s Riley Weiss, and Portland’s Alexis Mark.
On the way to the well-deserved recognition, Fulwiley averaged 19.5 points, four rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. She also shot 64% from the field and 42.9% from the 3-point arc. Her 24 points against Vanderbilt tied her career-high. Fulwiley reached that number in the SEC Tournament Championship Game victory over LSU last season.
The Columbia native is playing better defense lately, too. While three steals is a solid number over the two-game span, in a way that doesn’t show up in the box score, Fulwiley has been difficult to get by on the defensive end of the court.

Win tickets to Senior Day, South Carolina-Kentucky women’s basketball game
This season, Fulwiley is second on the Gamecocks in scoring at 12.1 points per game. She also adds 2.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.7 blocks. With better play recently, her shooting percentages have moved up to 42.3%/25.8%/76.2% on the year. If she continues logging strong performances, Fulwiley will bypass her numbers from a season ago when she was one of the country’s most dynamic freshmen.
This week, Fulwiley and the Gamecocks will finish the regular season with two Quad 1 opportunities. First, USC will travel to Oxford for a road contest against Ole Miss at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday. Then, on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., South Carolina will have Senior Day against Kentucky. Both games will broadcast on ESPN and stream on the ESPN app.
