On Sunday, South Carolina women’s basketball lost to the Texas Longhorns in Austin. The Gamecocks’ defeat was their first regular season loss in SEC play since December of 2021 and the first time they’d lost two regular season games since the season before that.

The Associated Press dropped South Carolina from second to fourth in their updated top-25 rankings. However, the NET rankings tell a different story.

As they have been for most of this season, the Gamecocks are still No. 1 in the NET. UConn and Texas have rounded out the top three for most of the year, too, and that also continued this week. The Huskies rank second in the NET, while the Longhorns rank third. The undefeated and unanimous No. 1 UCLA Bruins are fourth in the NET.

The NET, for those unfamiliar, is the most important ranking metric used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee. It factors in Team Value Index (essentially a team’s on-court results, location of games, and strength of schedule) and adjusted net efficient ratings (how well a team plays in those games, adjusted for the quality of opponent and location of games).

The NET has been high on USC all year. When one takes a look at the team’s overall resume, it is easy to see why. South Carolina has ten Quad 1 victories this season, more than any other team in the country. In fact, just one other team (Texas) has more than seven such triumphs. The Gamecocks also lead the nation in Quad 1 + Quad 2 wins with 13.

Looking to get back on track, South Carolina will hit the court two times over the next week. One will be a Quad 2 opportunity, while the other will present Dawn Staley’s team with yet another Quad 1 chance.

First, the Gamecocks will play an SEC contest against the Florida Gators at Colonial Life Arena. As part of the “Play 4 Kay” movement (for cancer awareness, specifically, cancer awareness for women; in honor of coaching legend Kay Yow), South Carolina and Florida will tip at 7:00 p.m. The SEC Network and ESPN app will broadcast and stream the conference tilt.

Then, USC will play its annual rivalry contest against the UConn Huskies. South Carolina will host the top 10 showdown in Columbia. The Gamecocks have won four in a row in the series and five of the last six. Sunday’s matchup between the two biggest programs in the sport will tip at 1:00 p.m. ABC will broadcast the game, while the ESPN app will make it available for streaming.
