South Carolina’s three new players have their uniform numbers.

Graduate transfer Kierra Fletcher will wear 41. Although it’s an unusual number for a point guard, it’s the same number she wore for four seasons at Georgia Tech. Fletcher will become the fifth Gamecock to wear the number. She will be the first player with the number since Alaina Coates wore it from 2013-17.

For the second season in a row, a freshman who wore 22 in high school has had to make an adjustment because South Carolina has taken that number out of rotation in honor of A’ja Wilson. Last year Saniya Rivers doubled her number and wore 44. This year, Ashlyn Watkins is going in the opposite direction and halving it, in a manner of speaking. Watkins will wear 2. She will be the seventh Gamecock to wear the number, all in the last 20 years. Eniya Russell wore the number 2 the past two seasons, with Te’a Cooper and Olivia Gaines among the other players who have worn it. Watkins also wore 5 in the McDonald’s All-American Game and 25 when she played travel ball, but those numbers belong to Victaria Saxton and Raven Johnson.

Talaysia Cooper had to find a new number. She wore the number 10 in high school (it’s even part of her Twitter handle), but that number already belongs to Kamilla Cardoso. Cooper wore the number 0 for her travel team, but it belongs to Olivia Thompson. She wore 55 in the McDonald’s All-American Game but apparently didn’t care for it. With the other numbers claimed, Cooper will wear 11 for South Carolina. She will be the tenth Gamecock to wear the number. It was most recently worn by Destiny Littleton for the past two seasons, but perhaps most famously was worn by La’Keisha Sutton from 2008-2012.

South Carolina has not announced any changes for returning players, so the full roster should be:

  • 2 – Ashlyn Watkins
  • 4 – Aliyah Boston
  • 5 – Victoria Saxton
  • 10 – Kamilla Cardoso
  • 11 – Talaysia Cooper
  • 12 – Brea Beal
  • 15 – Laeticia Amihere
  • 20 – Sania Feagin

* NCAA rules prohibit the use of any digit higher than five as part of a uniform number. The rule helps officials signal the scorer’s table (five fingers on each hand).

** The numbers 13 (Martha Parker), 14 (Shannon Johnson), and 53 (Sheila Foster) are officially retired. The number 22 is unofficially retired for A’ja Wilson.
