On MiLaysia Fulwiley’s first collegiate possession, she grabbed a defensive rebound, pushed the fast break, and lobbed a pass to Kamilla Cardoso for a layup. Then the fun started.

She turned a steal into a layup for Raven Johnson. Then took a block to the other end for a basket. And then it happened.

Hannah Hidalgo made a tough layup over Fulwiley, and she seemed to take it personally. Fulwiley got the inbounds pass and raced to the other basket, turning it into a two-on-three fast break.

Staring down Maddy Westebld, she went behind the back, then faked a pass to Kamilla Cardoso to get Kylee Watson out of her way, went under the rim, and flipped the ball over her shoulder for the basket.

You had to see it to believe it, and if you did see it you probably didn’t believe it.

Over 4,200 miles from home, Fulwiley had arrived. Only she wasn’t impressed.

“That comes with a lot of practice,” Fulwiley said. “I do that move a lot in practice. In game time it felt normal.”

Dawn Staley wasn’t having any of it. In the third quarter, Fulwiley whipped a no-look pass through three defenders to Te-Hina Paopao for a layup, and Staley threw up her hands in disbelief.

“I don’t have the gall, nor have I ever had the gall to do multiple moves. I was like, straight behind-the-back pass. To add two and three and four moves an action was pretty impressive,” Staley said. “I said she was a generational talent and that’s what I meant.”

Social media had the same reaction. “No she didn’t!” exclaimed Skylar Diggins-Smith. Kevin Durant said, “Hidalgo and Fulwiley moving DIFFERENT out here, turn on ESPN.” But the biggest reaction came from Magic Johnson, whose sister Evelyn played for the Gamecocks in the early 1980s.

Fulwiley finished the game with 17 points, six assists, and six steals. She was one of a handful of freshmen who dominated headlines Monday. Hidalgo had 31 points, a Notre Dame record for a debut. JuJu Watkins scored 32 points to lead Southern Cal’s upset of Ohio State. Mikayla Williams had 17 points for LSU.

But only Fulwiley had SportsCenter’s top play:

As a postscript, this is the amount of gall Staley had as a player:
