South Carolina’s Repeat Tour begins in two weeks, on November 4 in Las Vegas. Throughout October, GamecockCentral is profiling each member of the team and how she is expected to contribute this season. Today is the player they call “Mouse,” freshman Maddy McDaniel.

Maddy McDaniel (Freshman, Point Guard, 5-9)
Player profile
McDaniel is a pure point guard who looks to distribute as much as she looks to get her own shot. She is lightning-quick off the dribble and excels at getting to the rim. McDaniel was the second-ranked point guard in the 2024 recruiting class. She was the first player in the class to commit to South Carolina, saying she knew on her visit she wanted to be a Gamecock.

Preseason assessment
McDaniel, who suffered two different knee injuries in high school, had minor surgery on her right knee that kept her out of the exhibition against Memphis. She should be ready for the Clayton State exhibition, or the season opener at the latest. The injury meant we didn’t get to see McDaniel’s progress, but reports from preseason practice have been positive.

Burning question: Is McDaniel the point guard of the future?
McDaniel will be the third point guard this season (possibly fourth or fifth if Tessa Johnson and MiLaysia Fulwiley get spot minutes at the position). She told me over the summer that she didn’t come here to sit on the bench, but she’s also realistic about the depth at guard. A productive season for McDaniel might not involve production in games, but practicing hard, learning the ropes, and getting mental reps so that she can take over as the starter in a year or two.
