For the first time in three seasons, South Carolina is not the AP Top 25 preseason no. 1. Defending champion LSU tops the preseason poll and the Gamecocks come in at sixth. It officially ends South Carolina’s two-year reign atop the AP Top 25.
South Carolina went wire-to-wire atop the poll in 2021-22, when the Gamecocks went 35-2 and won their second national championship. Last season, South Carolina was ranked no. 1 in every poll during its undefeated regular season before losing in the Final Four. The AP does not release a postseason poll, so it never took the Final Four into account.
South Carolina is only the third team to be ranked no. 1 in every poll for two consecutive seasons. South Carolina had been ranked no. 1 every week since January 13, 2020, a stretch of 38 consecutive weeks. That streak is the second-longest ever.

South Carolina was also ranked first in the 2020 preseason poll and finished sixth. In 2019, South Carolina began the season ranked eighth and finished ranked no. 1. The AP released a postseason poll that season because the NCAA Tournament was canceled, and the Gamecocks claimed the top spot then.
